i don't know what to write for my next article (for edge davao). any suggestions? im going for a summer theme. :-)

Pinoy Youth: Still Clueless?

Recession.
Global Crisis.
Failing Economies.
Job Shortage.
Poverty.

We have been hearing much of these words lately. The problems of the world’s economies are all over the news; they are the topic of almost everyone’s conversations and they have now been accepted as a fact.

But the younger generation, my generation, doesn’t know much about these words. Basically, we know that the economies of the world are not doing great; even the highly industrialized countries are now feeling the crunch.

I do not know if there really is a global crisis, or if we should accept this as a fact. And even though it has been scattered in every news channel, in every newspaper, and in every important website, we still don’t understand it. Honestly, we kids haven’t felt the crunch yet. We have yet to feel the effects of the so-called global crisis first-hand.

The people we associate with the global crisis are the Americans we see crying on TV for not being able to pay rent; for being laid off of their jobs; for not having enough to eat; for not having enough money to put their kids through college; or for not being able to pay for a decent home.

And although these scenes are heart-breaking, they are as common as Buko Pie in the Philippines. I mean, this isn’t something new. Long before I was born, this has been the plight of, my fellow Filipinos. And just because Americans are now going through these problems as well, they are suddenly worthy causes to panic and be alarmed?

More importantly, these scenes pale in comparison with the latest episodes of the even more dramatic American Idol, or Gossip Girl. Adults always blame us kids for not caring too much, but can you really expect us to care about something we can’t relate with?

While Americans on the opposite side of the world complain about these problems that we Filipinos now consider part of our culture, here we are trying to convince ourselves that there is a crisis for the sole reason of pretending to be informed and in tune with current events. Which leads us to question: have we always been living in crisis, and not know it?

Because the cries of these Americans we see on TV are familiar. Too familiar in fact, we kids don’t even find it reason enough to care. What we want is plain and simple: basically, we just want to when we are going to feel the crunch and how we are going to feel the effects of this crisis, because last time we checked, we still had money to go out partying, we still had money to buy the latest “it” gadget, we still had money to spend on gourmet coffee; and we still had the money to stay beautiful (gosh, even my labandera sports manicured and polished nails).

What I want to say is: we are not an informed lot. And this is a very sad fact, considering that we have become global as a generation. Our generation has become more in-tune with the rest of the world, we have succumbed to globalization in media, entertainment, technology and in other facets of life.We know more about the latest fashions and the latest widgets on Facebook than we do about this crisis. And you can’t really blame us kids. Nobody has tried reaching out to us to explain what is happening around the world, nobody has tried to break these terms down to help us understand what is happening around the world and if there is even reason to be alarmed. There is nothing to help us understand these ideas in terms we could actually understand and relate with. Right now, all we want is information; digestible, understandable, practical information to help us understand what is actually going on. Sadly, we have nothing of the sort, thus we have to rely on guesses, mere hunches.

But maybe it is better for us to keep guessing. Maybe it is better for us not to know. Maybe it is better for us to be clueless about the economy. Maybe we just don’t care. Maybe we just don’t want to know. After all, information, though hard to digest, is just a click away. Maybe we have made youth an excuse to not care about these stuff because maybe we do not have to think about them. Maybe we have deemed it irrelevant to know how poor we are. Maybe it is better for us to not know so that (unlike people from highly industrialized countries who hoard and save and keep their money) we won’t change our spending patters, thus keeping the money, finances and assets rolling inside the country, which could probably keep the economy afloat. Or maybe that is just some ridiculous idea we have heard through he grapevine which we use to impress people on our knowledge about the topic.

We can have a million and one guesses, but the truth remains that, the youth sector is misinformed and almost even clueless about the topic at hand. And maybe, just maybe, we would start to care once we know enough about this crisis.

But who am I to know? I am just some ignorant brat who knows absolutely nothing about the economy, and has enough time on his hands to start writing about his generation’s depressing cluelessnes on the factors that affect the way we live.

The Sounds of Summer

The season of sun-worshipping and luaus has started, and I am sure that, just like any self-respecting partyphile, you will be throwing your own summer-themed party before classes start.

You have managed to shed those last pesky pounds to squeeze in to your teeny weenie bikini; you are now sporting a gorge tan; your frozen margaritas are now waiting to be served in those cute glasses with even cuter paper umbrellas; your munchies are prepared; and your guests are now barging in; and then you remember… you haven’t prepared any summery sounds. Tsk tsk. No partyphile would ever throw summer party without playing those oh-so-summery ditties (the horror!).

Well, good for you, you have a copy of this Partyphile’s play list. Here it goes.

Top 5 Summer Songs:

1. Urbandub’s 1st Of Summer- Well, the title just says it all. This is the perfect song to play right at the start of the party. It is cool, fun, carefree, with a rock edge. With a beat that is almost hypnotic, hard guitars and lyrics that go: “parked car, this night sky, makes city lights shine like diamonds….”, can it ever really go wrong?
2. Kjwan’s Mesmerize (One Look) – This is the definition of coooool. With a catchy hook (“One look, and I’m mesmerized by your eyes…”), and a light, summery sound, this song by Kjwan is definitely one of Las Islas Filipinas’ fave Summer ditties.
3. Sheryl Crow’s Soak Up The Sun- This song is fun, easy to listen to, very bright, sunny and breezy. In my opinion, Sheryl Crow should be hailed Queen of Summer Songs for penning this gloriously sunshiny ditty about laying on the sand and sun worshipping. At the very core, it is a jolly song with a simple melody that is always fun to dance to in any party or maybe even sing to in the car on your way to the beach. Wherever, whenever you play this song, it will just elevate your mood and bring you to Summer nirvana.

(We have a tie)
311’s Amber- Once you hear this, you will be (almost instantly) transported to those fun, happy days by the beach: toes curled up in the sand, waves in the background, and the sun shining high above. Get ready for LSS (last-song syndrome for all you baby boomers), because Amber’s catchy guitar intro, chillaxed sound and nostalgic chorus will make you sing long after you step out of the party.

4. Jason Mraz’ I’m Yours- I don’t know if this was released on a summer, but this song just spells L-U-A-U. This just might be the Philippines favorite song of 2008. So what if it has been overplayed, people have not gotten tired of it, no matter how much they say so.
5. Sunset Daze’s Selfish- This is one of those songs that never seem to get tired. As you already know, this used to be a pop song of sorts, before Sunset Daze revived it and turned it into the Beach House classic that we know it today. If this does not bring you memories of Summer, I don’t know what could.

Of Course, five uberly-summery songs aren’t enough to make a playlist, so here are more tracks for your Summer listening pleasure:

Feel Good Summers:

If you are looking for some feel-good tracks for your summer luau why not play Just Go by Lionel Richie and Akon, Sunshine by Gabrielle, Summer Sunshine by The Corrs, Hey Look at the Sun by Sitti, or Walking On Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves

My personal favorites: Solange Knowles, Beyonce’s little sister, has a new song called Sandcastle Disco. This crazy, sexy, jazzy and fun track is sure to bring you in the summer party mood. Play this side by side with Corrine Bailey Rae’s Put Your Records On, and you will feel so carefree and light, you just might hear birds singing behind you ear.

Summer on the Rocks:

Although these tracks don’t really mention the sun, summer, or the ocean, they are light, carefree and easy to listen to: kinda like the season of Summer. So if you are looking for edgier songs to play for your summer party try All the Small Things by Blink 183, Someday by Sugar Ray, Smooth and Maria Maria by Santana, or No Doubt’s Hey Baby.

My Personal Favorites: Island in the Sun by Weezer is a gloriously summery track. From the first “hip hip” you are immediately brought to a more relaxed place, where problems, chaos and drama is not possible. Play this back to back with Third Eye Blind’s Semi-Charmed Life and you are sure to keep your guests happy, dancing the night away.

RnB Summer:

If RnB is more of your genre why not play Mariah Carey’s Dream Lover or Honey? Or you could even play Paris Hilton’s Stars are Blind, Akon’s Take You There, Akon’s Take You There, Crazy In Love by Beyonce, My boo by Ghostown DJs, Summer Girls by LFO or Diana King’s Shy Guy. These songs have a summery carefree sound that blend well with any summer party’s mood. For a more urban flava’ try Lil Flip’s Sunshine, which should transport yopu back toy our summer days of High School.

My Personal Favorites: Hey Ya by Outkast is definitely one of the coolest, most fun songs I have ever heard. Outkast’s songs always have a tinge of humor and wit which is always cool to play in any summer party. Play this side by side with Artful dodger’s Summer Jam. Ok, ok. So this isn’t exactly RnB, and it is somewhat reminiscent of old-school house tunes, but it seems like a two-step to me; which I hear is a branch of RnB

Beach House:

For a dose of mainstream House music, perfect for any beach party, try playing On a High by Duncan Sheik, Let Me Think About It by Ida Corr, Kylie Minogue’s Wow, Just The Way You Are by Milky, Telepopmusik’s Just Breathe or Moony’s Flying Away. I also suggest Pure Shores by Al Saints, which isn’t really house, but I’m actually confused on what genre it is under. 

My Personal favorites: Ever After by Bonnie Bailey. This was the Summer song a couple of years back. It just seems to instantly transport you to those careless days on the beach with your friends and family; it just brings you to that place of bliss; when I die, this wil be my heaven’s soundtrack. Play this side by side with Safri Duo’s Bongo song (which reminds everyone of summer fashion shows, bikini season and gimmcikas in Bora) and you are sure to have a great party.

Bordering on the Baduy:

Thease songs I do not have to explain. They are just what they are, fun, almost baduy summer ditties: Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, Sisqo’s Thong Song, Offspring’s Pretty Fly For A White Guy. These are just crazy, fun songs. Just play them, trust me, it won’t destroy your reputation as a partyphile.

Confession #10:

This is totally not just my list of fave summer songs. This list was gathered from an online survey answered by my sweet friends from YM, Facebook, Friendster and Plurk. So it is pretty accurate (not!). Whatever just pick the songs you like and prepare your own little play list. And please, please, please, send me an invite for your summer-themed party at http://confessionsofapartyphile.blo

The Summer Alphabet

Summer, the funnest, most exciting season, is right around the corner. The air is warm, days are longer, bright colors fill the runways and display windows and everyone seems to be more chillaxed than usual. And to remind you of the essentials of the most gloriously sunny season, here are the Summer A to Zs:

Aqua- Aqua is a cool and calming color. Why not fill your room with Aqua accents to truly celebrate Summer? It will not only put you in a relaxed mood, it will also remind you of all the fun memories you have of the ocean.

Bikini Season- Bikini season is here, go on girls, take those sexy bikinis out of your top drawer and flaunt them with style! Boys, stick to the board shorts, trust me, no matter how fit you are, we don’t want to see you in Speedos.

Confidence- Summer is all about confidence. So what if your love handles are not, well, lovely? Who cares if your abs are covered in flab? So what if you aren’t a size 0? The only accessory you need is confidence. So hit the beach in whatever outfit you want to wear; and let everybody ogle at you… if not for your body, at least for your confidence.

Dance- A wave of fun, summery songs are sure to blast the airwaves in this season of sun, sand, and sea; and when you hear these catchy tunes, don’t try to fight it, just dance and groove to the beat!

Enjoy- Stop complaining about the heat. Enjoy the sun and go to a beach or stay indoors and blast the AC; just try to enjoy. Summer in the Phillies seems to be getting shorter and shorter, so enjoy it before June brings back those hard rains and little tragedies.

Flip-Flops– Rest those heels and toes and slip into some flip-flops. Wear them at home, on the beach, while lounging by the pool, in your favorite coffee shop, on the way to work, or to the mall; wear them anywhere. This season you have the license to rest your feet; just make sure that the pair you wear is stylish enough to make those gorgeous feet stand out!

Glasses- Sunglasses are one of the hottest things you could wear this summer. Go for something fun and quirky or stick to the classic frames; just make sure to pick a pair that compliments your face’s shape; and get ready for a stylish Summer ’09!

Hose Down- If you can’t go to the beach or pool just yet, do what you did as a child: strip down to your swim wear, turn on the water and blast yourselves with your garden hose! This is sure to bring out your inner child and will surely result to a day of silly fun and laughter.

Ice Cream- Ice cream has always been the favorite summer food around the world, so when you can’t take any more of the heat, go for this sweet and cool treat. Buy yourself a pint of sorbet, sherbet, or ice cream in refreshing flavors like watermelon, melon, or orange and melt your Summer worries away with every cool lick.

Just Chill- Lie on the beach; read your book under the shade of a tree; drink a tall glass of iced coffee; or simply watch TV in bed all day. Summer is supposed to be casual and carefree. This Summer… just chill.

Kick It- For a more exciting pastime this summer, try Futsal. Although this is as fun and exciting as regular soccer, this indoor version won’t force you to play under the heat of the sun all day. Plus, it might just leave you with a spankin’ hot body before classes start.

Lounge- If swimming and underwater frolic isn’t really your thing, grab a cold drink, put on a gorgeous pair of shades and lounge by the pool or near the beach. Not only will you look mysteriously sexy, you will also get a gorge tan in the process.

Margaritas- When throwing a party by the beach, there is absolutely no better way to beat the heat than buy sipping on some freezing-cold margaritas. These delish drinks are a Summer staple, and there seems to be an infinite way of serving margaritas. Pick your favorite recipe, flavor and color and serve them up in your next Summer luau.

New Knowledge- Summer classes have always been popular for schooling kids because they take up most of the day, and keep the tots busy while the parents are away. However, summer classes aren’t exclusively for kids; there are a lot of summer classes for adults as well. Try cooking, baking or painting classes which are surprisingly easy to find. If you want to lose weight while learning a new sport, try Ultimate Frisbee,

Ocean- Do I really have to explain why the Ocean is here?

Pool Party- When you can’t go to the beach for a Luau, why not throw a pool party instead. This is one staple of Summer, even for us Davaoeños who live so close to the beach, that we just can’t over look. The pool just brings a different type of fun for everyone.

Quiet Time- People often get carried away during summer and book too many parties, gimmicks, and trips. So when you really want to relax this summer, take some time alone and try to find your quiet place. You don’t really need to take a trip to have a vacation; sometimes the most important trip to make is a trip inside yourself.

Rafting – Everybody with a lust for adrenaline should gather up the gang and try white water rafting. It is fun, interestingly exciting and not that heavy on  the wallet!

Surfing – This Summer, Surfing is definitely “in”; so pack your bags, visit beautiful Siargao and surf away partyphiles!

Tan- Forget whitening lotions; spread some tanning oil and flaunt the best accessory this summer: a gorgeous, golden tan!

Umbrella- Although tans are chic this season, skin cancer is not. When you can’t slather on some SPF, grab an umbrella and protect that gorgeous hide!

Vacays- Plan a vacation away from everything and everyone that gives you stress. Plan a trip to somewhere serene and relaxing. You could go to nearby Samal, to Glan in Saranggani, Boracay, or somewhere out of the country. Your budget may limit your choices for vacay spots, but that doesn’t mean it should decrease the amount of rest and relaxation you could get.

Water- Stay hydrated this season and chug down your 8 glasses of water! Otherwise, you might catch yourself passed out from dehydration in some hot beach, looking, well, un-hot.

Xtra Large Halo-halo- Nothing spells summer in Las Islas Filipinas like a tall, xtra large tumbler of special halo-halo—xtra scoops of ice cream and xtra servings of Leche Flan required!

Yellow- Face it, not everyone looks good in yellow. However, this season, you may wear the color of summer and sunshine more than usual. Besides, is there anything sexier than a bright yellow top on gorgeously tanned skin?

Zzzzzzs-Get some sleep. If there is anything summer is popular for, it is those mini breaks and long weekends; so sleep for three days and get back to work feeling rejuvenated and relaxed.

Summer Is Definitely In

Heat is escaping from my head, although i juust took a shower an hour ago. My room is as hot as our toaster, and i'm sweating more profusely than usual. Summer HAS began, and i'm sure there is no stopping it. (duh!)

well, summer has always been one of my favorite seasons, after all, summer has always marked the start of "rest and relaxation". However, this is not the case right now. i am no longer in school, i have no reason to take a break because i don't really work that much.

and it bthers me so much that i play summer-y and happy songs on air for my radio show when i can't even enjoy my summer... and my boss tells me to stay posityive on air so it's not like i can rant about not being able to hit the beach...not that i would really want to rant, but sometimes, i just get the urge to.

i mean, while playing summery, feel good songs, i just imagine some lame ass lazy boy lying on the sand, watching the sun set while listening to the song im playing and sipping on some cold margaritas or munching on some halo-halo

and then you realize the world is unfair...while some other person is relaxing (while trying to look for a hook-up of course) on the beach, you are stuck in the most "anti-summer" work ever..

if you don't get what i mena, try visiting our radio station...sit in the booth for at least 5 minutes...and im sure you would understand my i almost freeze to death for those three hours that i "work"

cnfession:

anyways..whats important is that someday soon...i mean real real soon...this summer...

im going to a beach with no money, with no food, and equipped only with the insatiable urge to party, chillax and of course the thirst for beer and intresting young people...

summer...here i friggin' come!

Over The Ever AFter Rainbow

I was planning to post one summer song per day bnut i didnt get a chance to do that yesterday...so here's a double treat for all of you!

In response to: The Plight Of a Partyphile

i stumbled upon this blog this afternoon:

THE PLIGHT OF A PARTYPHILE
Being a partyphile stings. It can lead u nowhere. At certain times when you got drunk from drinking
sprees, and the world seemed to doom upon you, you can find yourself lying on the ground with your
back full of dirt and grime, and you feel like suspending in mid-air. You wouldn’t believe you are really
experiencing an actual trance or astral projection of your life. No magic, no tricks, and for real. Not surprising
really. This is my reward after those endless hours of shouting and jumping up and down the ledge, waving my hands, banging my head, and getting frantic and crazy with the R&B music. Seems like I was
put of my mind for a moment. And the whole world is mine. Mine alone, and nobody can take it from me. But some good things never last, right? Here’s my dilemma after the exhilarating party: 1. I lost my wallet and bills 2. I suffered a terrible headache and stomach pain
3. I was soaked with sweat and marred with food grease and
liquors 4. I had a hard time remembering my name
5. I was too scared to resurface for the next day 6. I cancelled all my appointments because
I have to take more aspirins to ease the migraine.

Confession # 666:

All I can say is... gross..

first of all...nobody goes wild for RnB music..well at least...not
anymore...gross....blah

secondly...who the hell loses his walet while on a gimmick spree?

third and foremost (i am aware that its grammatically wrong..its justa joke
my friends and i have...get with the program)

again

third and foremost...it irritates me that the writer put the title "plight of
a partyphile"

my freaking god...not because you go wild for a night means u can call urself
a partyphile..it takes hard work to work your way up the social ladder.and
to
give yourself that title..and complain about your stupidity, well
that
just
proves how ignorant you are about the world of
partying..

to all you partyhile wannabees out there: there is a reason why people STILL
dont know you. theres a reason why you still pay for your drinks, and
entrance
fees...

and if u could relate with the "plight of a partyphile"

THATS the reason...you arent a partyphile...fuck

that shopuld have been titled "plight of a non-partyphile who was trying so
hard to party"

eeew..im talking too muc

it jus iritates me that people do stuf stupidly and complain about
it.gross

my suggestion: put a lil class in your
act

New Davao

Bagobo.
Bilaans.
Guiangans.
Tagacaolos.
Manobos.
Mandayas.
Mansakas.
Gimikeros.

Alright, alright, I know what you are thinking. The last word does not really belong in that particular line up. But if you really think about it, maybe it does, doesn’t it?

When we speak of tribes in Davao we often think of the Lumads and the natives who live high above in the mountains; but what you, and the rest of the people who belong in our generation, do not realize is that this isn’t necessarily the case. No matter where you originally come from, no matter how long you have been settled in this city, and no matter how little you know about your other Davaoeño brothers and sisters; you are now part of the New Davaoeño tribe.

Yup, you may not be consciously aware of it but you are now part of the new tribe of Davao, a breed of educated, street-smart, and confident people. The yuppies and students that walk the city streets unknowingly form one homogenous tribe; we share the same interests, attitudes and points of view. We may not know it, but we share a lot of common traits which now dictate, not only how the economy of Davao moves, but also how we deal with each other.

Unlimited Rice, Pito-Baynte and Eating Hearty

Surprisingly (or not), the new breed of Davaoeños is still much like the past generations of Pinoys. We still eat five times a day; merienda is still a must, and Banana-Cue, Pito-Baynte (7 for 20 pesos) Barbeque and Tulo-Diyes (3 for 10 pesos) Siomai are still staples of the dining table, or at least the side walk right outside school gates.

We still use sawsawan with every meal, thus explaining the abundance of toyo (soy sauce), suka (vinegar), calamansi (native lemon), sili (chili), patis (fish sauce), ketchup and pinakurat (well. there’s no translation. You will just have to try this one yourself) in all Davaoeño restaurants. We still invite whoever happens to pass by our dining tables to join us in eating with a loud “mangaon ‘ta!”. And we still enjoy eating our favorite sud-an (viand) with a steaming hot cup of rice, no matter how many times Ms. Winfrey tells us to do otherwise.

My humble opinion: Unless she has tried eating hot, freshly cooked Bulad (dried fish) dipped in vinegar, chili and paired with fresh tomatoes, served over some steaming white rice… she can’t tell us Davaoeños to quit rice altogether.

What’s more, unlike the Manila crowd, we are less obsessed with eating healthy thus Kwek-kwek, Fish Ball, Balot, frozen strong beer and, much to the horror of Manilenyos, unlimited rice are still favorites among Dabawenyos.

And this is actually good for us: we still get to enjoy our food, no matter how embarrassingly cheap they are; and we don’t even need to feel guilty about stuffing our hearts with all the cholesterol it can take (seriously, now is a good time to bring in the Sisig, Bulalong Kalabaw and Crispy Pata)

Anti-Sosyal, Passing Gas and the Magic F. Torres Brings.

Unlike past generations, we have stopped trying to be “sosyal”. We are now content with being ourselves and even put a premium on simple living. Thus, fancy restos are now being snubbed; we appreciate simple Filipino food like Barbeque, Inihaw na Isda and other home-cooked favorites that can compete (in price) with even the most established fast-food chains.

Even bars are now getting shrugged; partyphiles have gone back to the old Filipino way. It used to be, when you walked the streets at night, you would see a group of men sharing chit-chats over some cold beer in every baranggay, in every kanto, in every sari-sari store. And we just might have gone back to this very Noypi tradition of conversing over beer, but unlike the generations of our parents, we now find the right place and time for it: thus, as everyone has probably realized by now, F. Torres is where all the magic happens.

And, unlike generations before us, we are never embarrassed to admit that we don’t have money, that our feet smell or that we just let out a silent but deadly fart. Trust me, we have become anything but sosyal.

Free WiFi, Chillaxing and Gym Buddies

The only exception to the “anti-sosyal” rule, would probably be the coffee shops. We still frequent them even if we know we can get our caffeine fix at home for a much, much, much lower price; because coffee shops are the perfect venue for lazy conversation (and of course, free WiFi). They set the stage for great conversations and somehow, after a trip to your favorite café, you feel relaxed. And this is what we are after: stress-relief.

Wellness and relaxation have become the priorities for the new Dabawenyo tribe. We spend money for spa services and massages, and no, I don’t mean the local manghihilot. We go out partying to forget all the chaos that life brings (yes, Mom and Dad, the only reason why we go out on gimmicks is to relieve stress) and kiss our worries goodbye. And we now enroll in our local gyms to help sweat our stress away (aside from the fact that it is also a great way to find new friends. Gym buddy, anyone?). We put a premium on good living and letting our hair down after a hard day at work. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have our share of mischief and misdemeanor.

Informed Wild Children, Not-So-Squeaky-Clean Images, and Owning up to Mistakes

Older generations often think of us as rowdy or “wild”, but I think my generation is more informed and make wiser decisions. That is not to say that we do not have our share of wild nights, but I’m pretty sure, we have not been doing anything that our parents’ generations haven’t done before. However, the difference is in the way we handle these facts of life. We may be wild (but I am doubtful that we are wilder than any of the generations before us) but this time, we are confident enough to admit that we are. We admit to doing what we do, we are not a generation who tries to seem squeaky-clean; we have gone away with all the “kaplastikan” and we have matured well enough to realize that, although it is not okay to make stupid mistakes, it definitely is okay to own up to them.

Things I Know For Sure

Of course, an article could never capture the true essence of the new Dabawenyo tribe but these things I know for sure: we know what we want and we know how to get it; we have mastered the art of remaining under the radar while moving mountains; we are oblivious to the fact that we have great potential; we still love fried food, Hebi and Choc-nut; we have done away with social-climbing; farting is not that big a sin as it used to be; and more importantly, we love and appreciate Davao and all the
quirks it brings along with it.

We still eat five times a day (merienda is still a must), we still use “sawsawan” with every meal, and we still invite whoever happens to pass by our tables to join us in eating our favorite “sudan” with a steaming hot cup of white rice (no matter how many times Ms Winfrey tells us to do otherwise). Unlike the Manila crowd, we are less obsessed with eating healthy thus Kwek-kwek, Fish Ball, Balot, frozen strong beer and, much to the horror of Manilenyos, unlimited rice are still favorites among Dabawenyos.

Unlike past generations, however, we have stopped trying to be “sosyal”. We are now content with being ourselves and even put a premium on simple living. Thus, fancy restos are now being snubbed; we appreciate simple Filipino food like Barbeque, Inihaw na Isda and other home-cooked favorites that can compete (in price) with even the most established fast-food chains.

Even bars are now getting shrugged off; partyphiles have gone back to the old Filipino way. It used to be, when you walked the streets at night, you would see a group of men sharing chit-chats over some cold beer in every baranggay, in every kanto, in every sari-sari store. We have gone back to this Filipino tradition of conversing over beer, but unlike the generations of our parents, we now find the right place and time for it: thus, as everyone has probably realized by now, F. Torres is where all the magic happens.

The only exception to the “anti-sosyal” rule, would probably be the coffee shops. We still frequent them even if we know we can get our caffeine fill at home for a much, much, much lower price; because coffee shops are the perfect venue for lazy conversation (and of course, free WiFi). They set the stage for great conversation and somehow, after a trip to your favorite café, you feel relaxed. And this is what we are after: stress-relief.

Wellness and relaxation have become the priorities for the new Dabawenyo tribe. We spend money for spa services and massages; we go out partying to forget all the chaos that life brings, and we now enroll in our local gyms to help sweat our stress away. We put a premium on good living and letting our hair down after a hard day at work. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have our share of mischief and misdemeanor.

Of course, an article could never capture the true essence of the new Dabawenyo tribe but these things I know for sure: we know what we want, we know how to get it, we have mastered the art of remaining under the radar while moving mountains, we are oblivious to the fact that we have great potential, we still love fried food, Hebi and Choc-nut, we have done away with social-climbing, and more importantly, we love and appreciate Davao and all the quirks it brings along with it.

You Just Graduated, Now What?

It is graduation season again, and even though I hate to be a party popper, it must be said that graduating is not an easy ride. No matter how you feel about graduation right now, it still holds true that it will bring a lot of changes to your life. And these changes, whether positive or otherwise, may be intimidating, scary and confusing.

Students, especially graduating students, always think that graduation is the end; the finish line in the race of education and learning. What they seem to forget is that this is not actually just an end, it is also a beginning; a beginning of a totally different life.

After graduation you will have to start fending for yourself; say goodbye to your allowance, say goodbye to those lazy afternoons of chit-chats over coffee, say goodbye to doing nothing. After graduation, you will have to do something worthwhile with your life; not because it is expected of you, but because you would want that for yourself. You will realize soon after graduation that, unlike in college, every little decision you make will definitely affect your future life; and it will be harder for you to be care-free and do what you want just because you want to do it. More importantly, it will be a lot harder to relax. You may think that after years and years of studying, you would want to de-stress and chillax; but when you wake up the day after graduation with nothing to do, nothing to look forward to, and with no friends in tow, you will realize that a day of rest and relaxation is the last thing you need.

Stress will definitely set in. Sometimes, you may even feel like you are alone in this journey to independence and success. People may not be there for you when you need them most; nobody might understand and support the decisions you make. The people who you consider friends may not be as friendly or as available as they used to be, and you may soon bring yourself to the realization that being independent from the confines of school also means having to be independent from family, friends and your comfort zone.

Yes, graduation and the changes it brings with it is tough, but remember my dear partyphile: you are tougher! Don’t think too much, live for the day and carefully map out your plans for the coming months. Apply for as many jobs as you can, or take a rest. Start your own little business, or manage your parent’s store. Go to Boracay for some hardcore partying, or stay at home and look for online jobs. Whatever it is you plan to do after graduation, do it without apologies. You are young, you are bound to make mistakes, and it is just a matter of being comfortable with the stupid mistakes you make. Try to figure out what you want in life and just go for that dream, otherwise you might end up in some lame job that will ultimately make you unhappy.

Dear partyphile reader, you have probably gone through a dozen hangovers in your lifetime, you have probably hurled out projectile vomit in public, and you may have probably even danced on top of some ledge in some bar that one (truly wild) time. You have gone through a lot in your lifetime; trust me, finding success after graduation is not going to be that tough.

So to all the graduates of 2009: enjoy the time you have before graduation. Be careless, make stupid mistakes, make even stupider decisions, go out with your classmates, tell your friends what you have always wanted to say and party hearty before that fateful day. Because after graduation, the real work begins, and even though I would hate to admit it, being exposed to the hardships and trials of the real world makes you want to lay low on the party scene. So enjoy what you have left of your college life, and relish the fact that you can still be immature, even for just a couple of days more. And please, please celebrate your graduation with a bang!

Throw your own graduation party, or party with your closest class mates. No matter what you do, celebrate that exciting day and party until the sun comes up, after all, that will officially be the last night you are allowed to party like there was no tomorrow! So drink all you want, dance all you want, laugh and cry all you want because the next time you will get together with your classmates, student life will just be a thing of your fun-filled past.

Confession # 26

Adults always tell students how hard it is to live in the “real world” even though students never really listen. And then you realize how truly hard it is as soon as you graduate. But I still tell my college friends not to listen to those rants about hardships and trials and the woes of fending for yourself and your family. College is supposed to be fun; one big adventure. And even though its real purpose is to prepare us for the “real world”, students shouldn’t know that. They should have the time of their lives…while they still can.

Congratulations to my dear friend Anna Vellarino, the
person who single-handedly inspired me to party like there was no tomorrow. She
taught me the ins and outs of the party scene; without her I would have never
truly appreciated the art of letting my hair down and enjoying the gimmick life;
more importantly, if it wasn’t for her, I would not even have this
column.

It has been a long five years, but you have finally made
it. You always say how lucky you are to have friends… but it was always us who
were the lucky ones to have you. Congratulations!
